Are The Anti Aging Properties Of Resveratrol Fact Or Fiction?

There has been a lot of exposure to Resveratrol and its anti aging properties. But there does not seem to be any hard and concrete scientific evidence that it can prolong ones health and life. While some animals testing has been done (of course this can be controversial) that suggest that it might have some benefits to extending life span it is difficult to replicate with humans. Some people have even suggested that Resveratrol might even have negative effects on peoples health. Some people feel that this supposed miracle product might in fact be carcinogenic. But as with many natural products there are lots of stories from both sides of the field. There would of course need to be more testing and that will likely not happen as the product can not be locked up and sold by one company as are the drug products that are released onto the market. It is interesting to note that there are lots of negative side effects to drugs as well so just because someone suggests Resveratrol might have carcinogenic properties does not mean it does or doesnt.

One fact, though, is abundantly clear. If resveratrol does have any positive effect on the health of the human body, it will only be able to do this if it is used as part of an overall strategic plan for improving longevity and skin quality. No substance is able to counter the damaging effects of many of the habits which are still common in Western society. The most obvious example of this is cigarette smoking, which has been the subject of many conclusive trials. Despite the overwhelming evidence of just how harmful it is, there are still many thousands of people who ignore the risks or at least are now trapped by the habit forming additives that are added to the tobacco products.

There are other risk factors to skin health which are far less well known. These include prolonged exposure to strong sunlight, and an excess of saturated fat in the diet. Trans fats, which are created when fats are transformed into saturated fat, are even more damaging. They increase the numbers of free radicals in the body. These free radicals are extremely damaging to the human skin, and they can even be a cause of cancer. Resveratrol has been touted as being able to counter these, but nothing has yet been scientifically proven. Yet just because it hasnt been scientifically proven does not mean it doesnt work. Gravity worked long before it was proven by science.

The one critical factor with resveratrol anti aging programs is to make sure that all of the nutrients which the body needs on a regular basis are part of the diet, before you begin to think of using resveratrol or any other supplement. There are essential vitamins which have been proven to have an antioxidant effect, reducing the numbers of free radicals in the body. The most important of these are vitamins C and E, which have been the subject of a great many scientific tests. Vitamin C needs to be taken every may because it is water soluble and passes out of the body easily.

It has been suggested that resveratrol may be one of the factors in the apparent reduction in heart disease rates among people who regularly drink red wine. As is so often the case, there is no scientific evidence to support this, and many scientists seriously doubt the hypothesis. Red wine contains only very small amounts of resveratrol, and it is doubtful that these amounts could have a significant effect on the cardiovascular system. There is another substance in red wine called proanthocyanidin, which is believed to be the most likely contributing factor to reducing heart disease rates.

Tests are continuing constantly into the properties of resveratrol, but the vast majority of these tests are being carried out on laboratory animals, and are therefore of only limited value. There have recently been tests carried out on fish which have conclusively demonstrated a positive effect when high doses were used. The fish which were consistently fed resveratrol were significantly healthier when they reached adulthood, and they went on to have an extended life span. They did, however, show a slightly increased mortality rate when young.

The resveratrol anti aging tests which have been carried out on mice in recent years have had a completely different result. No matter what the dose of resveratrol given, nor the age of the mice when treatment started, the result was that there was no difference in the life expectancy of any of the groups treated with resveratrol, compared to the control group. These are extensive tests carried on large numbers of mice, and while they have no real relevance to the possibility of human lifespan being affected by resveratrol, they are certainly not supportive of its advocates.

So, where does this leave the resveratrol anti aging theory, and what should you do about it? The answers are probably that it leaves just as much doubt as before the experiments started, and that you should probably do nothing. If you drink red wine, there is no reason to discontinue, at least not in regard to resveratrol, as whichever substance causes the increased protection against heart disease, there is no reason to doubt the statistics. If you want to use resveratrol as part of an anti aging campaign, make sure that you are using a comprehensive plan and not just relying on the effects of resveratrol anti aging. A complete plan that involves diet, supplements, sufficient sleep and exercise into a total health and longevity program for yourself.
